Inspired by a visit to Gorée Island in Senegal, The Return reflects on the Door of No Return the passage through which enslaved Africans were taken from their homeland, never meant to come back.
That doorway once symbolized permanent separation. Erasure. Finality.
But to stand before it today is to transform its meaning. To return is an act of remembrance, of reclamation, of quiet defiance. It affirms that while people were displaced, identity was not destroyed. Roots endured. Spirit survived.
The Return speaks to coming back not only physically, but spiritually. It honors those who were taken and those who carry their legacy forward.
We were forced to leave.
But we are still here.
